One young man was driving home from the gym, still sweaty, still in his workout clothes, when he felt pressed by the Holy Spirit right there behind the wheel. He did not go home to change first.
He pulled into our parking lot exactly as he was, walked in, and knew that day this was where he needed to be. Nobody blinked at the gym shorts. If anything, it made him easier to spot and easier to welcome. We have also had a couple of members in their early to mid twenties join us straight from an Open House event, and they now call this their church home.
This age group is often underserved. Young adults are not looking for a program. They are looking for real relationship, both with God and with the people around them. Scripture actually paints a picture of what that looks like in Acts 2:44, where believers were together and shared everything they had. That is the model. Not a crowd that tolerates you, but a family that shares life with you.
2. Teaching That Challenges You to Grow, Not Just Feel Good
A sermon that only makes you feel good on Sunday morning will not carry you through a hard Tuesday. Look for a church where the teaching pushes you toward actual growth, not just a temporary emotional high.
Good preaching should make you think, sometimes make you a little uncomfortable, and always point you back to scripture rather than just the pastor’s personal opinions. He takes people under his wing and mentors them into actually living out the gifts God has already given them.

We saw this firsthand when one of our older teenagers noticed something missing. There was no small group for teens her age, so instead of waiting for someone else to start one, she stepped up and started leading it herself. Nobody handed her a title or a curriculum first. Before you visit, take a look at the church’s website and see if they make it easy to find small groups, ministries, or serving opportunities.
